move your money

Move Your Money is a campaign launched by American University students, other universities and financial institutes in the Washington Dc to assist local communities to develop businesses and overcome the gross wealth inequality in the city.

The idea is to move some of the university's $312 million endowment money to local financial institutes like local banks and credit unions which will lend out to help local businesses and help revitalize the community. Specifically the students are campaigning to move 5% of the cash assets from the school's endowment into Community Development Financial Institution like the City First Bank.

Move your money in Washington is not a lone event. Actually in some other cities a similar move has been initiated.

In New York City, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has pledged to move 425 million of municipal tax dollars to local credit unions.

In Los Angeles City, the city Council is reportedly considering a measure to move all government money out of big banks that routinely foreclose on citizen's without mercy or trying to keep them in their homes.

Move your money should be a national campaign to encourage individuals and governments to move cash to financial institutions that are more friendly to the local communities and citizens. We have read news stories saying that some big banks are taking foreclosed homes from home owners and sell the homes for their own interest - in a way to take the equity from the owners.

Fred Schneider

Fred Schneider, B-52s

The Fred Schneider has been partying out of bounds as the male mouthpiece of the B-52s since the late ’70s. Through that band’s commercial success and longevity, Schneider’s goofy, new-wave jester shtick has evolved into an iconic voice that’s now an inspiration to younger artists. Schneider’s latest project, the Superions, showcases both his supreme silliness (”Who Threw That Ham At Me?” is one of his most riotous efforts) and influence (the Superions’ debut EP, Totally Nude Island, features remixes by four Athens, Ga., bands).

Along with fellow Superions Noah Brodie and Dan Marshall, Schneider has delivered a handful of songs that combine sex, sci-fi, shoplifting and a dance called the Disco Garbage Can. Schneider will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our Q&A with him.

Tamil Newspaper in Toronto Vandalized After Reporting on Sri Lanka President Visit

The offices of a Tamil newspaper in Toronto were vandalized over the weekend after the paper received a phone call threatening it for its reporting on the visit of Sri Lanka's president.

The newspaper, Uthayan, said it was threatened after reporting on a meeting between Kula Sellathurai, the president of the Canada-Sri Lanka Business Council and the United Tamil Council of Canada, had with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, The Toronto Star reported in an article by John Rieti.

The Star quoted Sellathurai as saying the threatening call made to Uthayan Editor Logan Logendralingam said, "Your friends went and met the president, now you go and see what happened to your store." The entire front of the office was described as smashed, but there were no immediate estimates of the cost of the damage.

Uthayan has a reputation as a moderate paper carrying news about the Tamil community, an ethnic minority in Sri Lanka which includes a rebel army recently defeated by the government, which is mostly ethnic Sinhalese.

night of the iguana

Richard Burton’s Night of the Iguana

Earlier in the day is Night of the Iguana, but debauched priests. well it just seems too close to Richard Burtons real life though it is a good film. Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is also on and if you like to see two drunk people yell at each other for two hours knock yo-self out. It also seems too close to Thanksgiving Day at the Burton/Taylor household to be great for some reason. Professors are either louts or potheads or rapists in movies. Im also a lawyer so I at least have Atticus Finch.
Does anyone do desperate better than Richard Dreyfuss? I totally got the potato Devils Tower and I have a errr soft spot for Teri Garr too. Earlier in the day is 2001 and 2010 back to back. I like sci-fi and HAL 9000 is ground breaking, etc., but I dont even care to figure it out or chew on it and I blame that on the director. After Third Kind is a Neil Simon doubleheader The Goodbye Girl and Chapter Two. Marsha Simon has relationship diffizzzzzzzzzzzz..

Splendor in the Grass is also on if you like movies about repressed Midwesterners and how they need to open their minds and their legs to be truly happy. Wow that was all positive wasnt it? To be fair to Neil Simon I did like Goodbye Girl when I saw it 20 years ago Chapter Two not so much.

Did I mention Im not a fan of 2001: A Space Odyssey starring Keir Dullea as Prince Valium?

Avandia

FDA report says Avandia should be taken off market: report

GlaxoSmithKline's (GSK, GSK.LN) diabetes medicine Avandia weakens the heart sufficiently to increase users' chances of the heart attacks and heart failure, according to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration report obtained by the New York Times, the paper reported on its Web site Friday night for its Saturday edition.

Citing the FDA report, the Times said that "if every diabetic now taking Avandia were instead given a similar pill named Actos, about 500 heart attacks and 300 cases of heart failure would be averted every month because Avandia can hurt the heart."

"[The drug] should be removed from the market," the FDA report said, according to the Times.

nbc olympic coverage

Chrono-challenged NBC great for Canada

The following should probably come with some kind of the warning: The words you are about to read are probably a bit late.

Then again, we are discussing the gorilla Olympic network, NBC, so you could say we're right on time.

Just as they have done for the better part of two decades, the network that spent $820 million US for rights fees is taking a prepackaged view of the Vancouver Olympics.

It's no biggie in most of the United States, especially with the network spilling more of its coverage to ancillary channels, which are not available in Canada, and showing a limited amount of live streaming.

But it's got to be hell for viewers on the U.S. west coast once again, waiting for hours to watch events which have already taken place. What worked 20 years ago is apparently still good now.

At least we've gone past the point where announcers no longer warn viewers not to plug their ears if they don't want to hear the results of an event before they are shown.

NBC's Olympics is supposed to be a time of network soothing, perhaps not for parent company shareholders, who were told months ago the Games wouldn't lose $200 million US, but $250 million.

The spin is that American audiences are supposed to forget the Jay Leno-Conan O'Brien faceplant during the next two weeks.

And if it works for NBC, why should we care? Think of NBC as the replay show; the world version of Hockey Night's After Hours.

If there's any reason to watch the American coverage -- and frankly CTV's early work has been so superior there doesn't seem as if there's a need -- it's only because of our curious nature as Canadians to check out how were are being portrayed.

So far, though, NBC has more than gone out of its way to get it right.

We're guessing the network might want to have back the suggestion at the opening ceremony that Olympic flag carrier Betty Fox was the mother of Michael J. Fox.

Otherwise, NBC has been hitting doubles and triples if not home runs the first few days. U.S. ratings are up 25 per cent over four years ago from the less time-friendly Winter Games in Turin.

The netwok's flagship Today show dragged Alexandre Bilodeau up to Grouse Mountain to be interviewed at 4 a.m. Monday even before they talked to American medallists. There wasn't a single moment of cringing, even during the yummy food segments.

Hours after some parts of the continent are discovering the best we have to offer, Americans are getting the right message.

"You all put up a fantastic show of the opening night. Keep it up," an emailer wrote from Orlando, Fla.

Maybe later can be better. Experiencing the Olympics only through TV and the Internet and see something amusing or outrageous? Drop Armchair Olympian a line at lullrich@theprovince.com during the Winter Games.

steve phillips

Steve Phillips admits 'mistakes'

Steve Phillips, the former ESPN baseball analyst and New York Mets general manager, said Monday that he knew he had a sex addiction problem in August -- 2 months before he was fired from his role with the network.

"What I want to do is take ownership," he said in an interview with Matt Lauer on NBC's Today Show. "I made some mistakes ... I'm fully responsible for what I did."

Phillips spoke publicly for the first time since he left the Pine Grove Behavioral Health and Addiction Services clinic in Hattiesburg, Miss., the same clinic golfer Tiger Woods reportedly attended.

Phillips didn't talk extensively about his time at Pine Grove, but did say that it is a place for people who are "broken" and "struggling to find answers."

Phillips said he realized he had a sexual addiction problem in August, while he was having an affair with ESPN production assistant Brooke Hundley. That affair eventually included Hundley contacting Phillips' wife at their home. It made its way to the New York tabloids, where Phillips was front-page fodder, in October.

"I recognized in August, I needed help," Phillips said. "I started calling facilities."

He said he had made the decision on Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, to attend the sexual addiction clinic. He was fired by ESPN two days later. Hundley was also let go by ESPN.

At the time, a representative for Phillips said he was entering a treatment facility "to address his personal issues."

"I couldn't stop myself from doing the things I was doing, even knowing the consequences," Phillips told Lauer on Monday.

A month earlier, Phillips wife, Marni, had filed for divorce. The couple had been married for 19 years. He has four children.

He said he has returned to his home, but doesn't know if his marriage can be saved. He declined to say if he had anything to tell Hundley.

"All of that is in the past," he said. "My focus is moving forward, trying to save my family."

Hundley, in a taped piece that preceded the Phillips interview, said that she was "young" and had made mistakes as well.

Phillips was the general manager of the Mets from 1997-2003. He said during that time, while taking a leave of absence from the team after a sexual harassment allegation, he had counseling locally for sexual issues, but didn't enter a treatment facility.

He worked at ESPN from 2005 through October.

powerball winning numbers

The winning numbers for tonight’s $115 million jackpot for the Powerball lottery are: 17, 22, 36, 37, 52. The Powerball is 24 and Power Play is 2.

Tonight’s drawing was the first one involving New Jersey lottery players. New Jersey started selling Powerball tickets on Sunday.

Powerball lottery tickets were a popular item on their first day of sale in the Garden State on Sunday, according to New Jersey lottery officials and retailers. About 10,000 to 15,000 tickets per hour were sold for the multistate lottery that day, said Dominick DeMarco, the state’s lottery spokesman.

State officials said revenue earned from Powerball sales will benefit the cash-strapped state Treasury. They said other state lotteries have seen increased sales after adding Powerball with very little impact on existing lottery games.

Powerball is available in 41 states, as well as the District of Columbia and Virgin Islands, with drawings held on Wednesday and Saturday nights at 11 p.m.

New Jersey is already part of the multistate Mega Millions game, which is drawn on Tuesday and Friday nights.

Miramar WR Ivan McCartney signs with West Virginia -- not Miami

He has plenty of teammates -- including his former quarterback -- at the West Virginia.

He spent his final official visit at Miami and has spoken very highly about Florida.

For weeks, there's been plenty of speculation about where Miramar receiver Ivan McCartney would choose to play college football.

Wednesday morning, the U.S. Army All-American made it official and signed with West Virginia.

McCartney, who helped lead Miramar to the Class 6A state football championship, was one of the few players in South Florida who opted to wait until National Signing Day to announce his college plans.

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound McCartney was a Sun Sentinel first-team All-County selection after making 37 catches for 747 yards with 10 touchdowns.

The Day The Music Died

Today, we remember the death of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and Big Bopper. This day is commonly known as "The Day the Music Died." It is the inspiration for the song "American Pie." This is the 50th anniversary of this event.

In 1959, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper made what ended up being their last public appearances at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa. They died in a plane crash the next day.

Charles Hardin Holley (September 7, 1936 – February 3, 1959), known professionally as Buddy Holly, was an American singer-songwriter and a pioneer of rock and roll. Although his success lasted only a year and a half before his death in an airplane crash, Holly is described by critic Bruce Eder as "the single most influential creative force in early rock and roll." His works and innovations inspired and influenced both his contemporaries and later musicians, notably The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, Don McLean, and Bob Dylan, and exerted a profound influence on popular music.

Holly was in the first group of inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Holly #13 among "The Fifty Greatest Artists of All Time".

Buddy Holly released only three albums in his lifetime. Nonetheless, he recorded so prolifically that Coral Records was able to release brand-new albums and singles for 10 years after his death, although the technical quality was very mixed, some being studio quality and others home recordings. Holly's simple demonstration recordings were overdubbed by studio musicians to bring them up to then-commercial standards.

The best of these overdubbed records is often considered to be the first posthumous single, the 1959 coupling of "Peggy Sue Got Married" and "Crying, Waiting, Hoping", produced by Jack Hansen, with added backing vocals by the Ray Charles Singers in simulation of an authentic Crickets record. "Crying, Waiting, Hoping" was actually supposed to be the "A" side of the 45, with the backup group effectively echoing Buddy's call-and-response vocal. The Hansen session, in which Holly's last six original compositions were overdubbed, was issued on the 1960 Coral LP TheBuddy Holly Story, Vol. 2. But the best "posthumous" records were the studio recordings, which included "Wishing" and "Reminiscing".

Buddy Holly continued to be promoted and sold as an "active" artist, and his records had a loyal following, especially in Europe. The demand for unissued Holly material was so great that Norman Petty resorted to overdubbing whatever he could find: alternate takes of studio recordings, originally rejected masters, "Crying, Waiting, Hoping" and the other five 1959 tracks (adding new surf-guitar arrangements), and even Holly's amateur demos from 1954 (where the low-fidelity vocals are often muffled behind the new orchestrations).

The last newBuddy Holly album was Giant (featuring the single "Love Is Strange"), issued in 1969. Between the 1959–60 Jack Hansen overdubs, the 1960s Norman Petty overdubs, various alternate takes, and Holly's undubbed originals, collectors can often choose from multiple versions of the same song.

oscar nominations 2010

Oscar nominations 2010: Jeff Bridges is best actor frontrunner

The 60-year-old is considered 1 of the best actors never to win an Academy Award. He was nominated for The Contender (2001), Starman (1985), Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1975), and The Last Picture Show (1972), and his role as The Dude in The Big Lebowski has become a cult classic.

In Crazy Heart he plays Bad Blake, a washed-up, alcoholic country singer. He also sings, and doesn't do a bad job of it.

Bridges comes from Hollywood stock - he is son of the late Lloyd Bridges and brother of Beau, who appeared with him in The Fabulous Baker Boys.

Clooney fits effortlessly into the role of Ryan Bingham, a "corporate downsizer" whose job it is to fire people as smoothly and painlessly as possible.

An Oscars regular, Clooney was a best actor nominee in 2008 for Michael Clayton but lost out to Daniel Day-Lewis for There Will Be Blood.

The 48-year-old has one Academy Award to his name - best supporting actor for Syriana in 2006. It was one of three nominations that year - the others were best director and best original screenplay for Good Night and Good Luck.

This is Firth's first Oscar nomination and his performance as a gay English professor grieving for the death of his lover (Matthew Goode) is considered the best work of his career.

Although he has received good notices in the past for serious dramas, he remains best known for two things - playing a wet-shirted Mr Darcy in the TV adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, and his comic, uptight Englishman act in everything from Bridget Jones's Diary to Mamma Mia!

The buzz around A Single Man began at the Venice Film Festival in September, when Firth, 49, won the best actor prize. He was also nominated for a Golden Globe.

When Nelson Mandela was asked 15 years ago who should play him in a film version of his life, his reply was instant: Morgan Freeman.

The star of The Shawshank Redemption and Driving Miss Daisy wanted to adapt Mandela's autobiography, Long Walk To Freedom, but the book was too big. Invictus, which focused on Mandela's role in South Africa's 1995 Rugby World Cup victory, was the perfect vehicle.

Freeman, 72, has three Oscar nominations and one win under his belt: best supporting acting for Million Dollar Baby in 2005.

Renner, 39, is a relative unknown.

Although he has worked in film and TV for over a decade, this is his breakthrough role.

In The Hurt Locker he plays Staff Sergeant William James, a bomb disposal expert in Iraq who is addicted to the risks of the job.

Renner fell into acting at college. He was studying computer science and criminology when he decided to try an acting class, and found he had a talent for it.

He has appeared in 28 Weeks Later and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, plus TV series SWAT and Angel. Forthcoming projects include Marvel blockbuster The Avengers and Ben Affleck's Boston crime drama The Town.

Buckeye Chuck: Spring Will Arrive Early

The handlers of Ohio's official groundhog, Buckeye Chuck, said the groundhog failed to see his shadow on the Tuesday morning.

According to legend, if a groundhog fails to see its shadow, spring will arrive early.

Chuck made his prediction amid overcast skies and spitting snow.

In western Pennsylvania, Punxsutawney Phil emerged to see his shadow before chilly revelers in Pennsylvania, meaning winter will last another six weeks.

The Inner Circle of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club annually announces Phil's forecast at dawn on Gobbler's Knob, about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.
