polyamorous

There is the buzz word – polyamorous. From the Greek word “poly”- meaning many or multiple, and Latin “amor” suggesting love. Many loves, many intimate relationships, at one time? What an adventurous love life, and perhaps, a roller-coaster ride if not complicated. What exactly does it imply?

Polyamorous is a nature of a relationship at a given time wherein a person has multiple romantic relationships with consent from all parties involved, describes Wikipedia. It is a type of relationship, a philosophy, a lifestyle revolving around the values of negotiation, openness, trust, honesty, dignity, and respect.

Here is the rub. Monogamy versus polyamory. Traditional versus liberalism. Religion versus relativism. Dr. Patrick Fagan notes these differences: In a monogamy culture that implies dating, marriage and “for better or worst” long-term relationship with just one partner, there is a sacred seal that binds the couple together. Sanctity of married life is recognized. In contrast, a polyamory culture hides religion or suppress it altogether, not to mention the worship of God.

Moreover, the culture of polyamory, he continues, acts only as a “safety net not only for the unlucky but the unrestrained, increasingly relies on social welfare programs to save its adherents from the effects of its form of sexuality. In political discourse, he notes, the culture of monogamy highlights men dedicated to their family, wife, and children, whereas the culture of polyamory promotes licentiousness – men and women incapable of sexual restraint. Relationships, in particular family life, is either scrupulously protected or instinctively exploited.

Then again, the beliefs from which the culture of polyamory exists negate these very differences. Freedom and sex may spell the difference; but the long-term consequences could make couples and lovers decide.

Grey s Anatomy Season Finale

I am reminded why I don't regularly watch "Grey's Anatomy" by the bloodbath of its season finale, something of a tradition at the show. Shonda Rimes and crew like to shake things up at season''s end, but lately it's been particularly anoying how willing they are to bring in sensationalistic plots or ready-made disasters, all while the characters continue to banter emptily in a one-size-fits all clipped, slangy style.

This year it was a guy with a gun who was unhappy at the terminal treatment of his wife. He goes in and starts shooting randomly, but there's no hospital security force or others to track or subdue the guy. Even when he's outnumbered in a room, nobody thows a bedpan at his head or otherwise tries to gang up to subdue him. Instead, they let him prattle on and shoot people. What's with these Seattle cops? They're on the scene for hours and are just starting to enter the building as the episode ends.

They're on the scene for hours and are just starting to enter the building as the episode ends.

And Rimes has targets on the back of everyone. It was just as last year when George and Izzy were both possibly dead. This year, some minor characters got offed and the core cast even seemed threatened.

Meredith's narration seems to hint she'll be the one shot since she pauses to refer to herself at the hospital in the past tense. Instead it's her husband the guy is gunning after. Alex gets it and rides in Rimes' elevator of death (she just can't get past that device) more minor charcteers drop like flies. Even so, the lesbian characters are bent on repairing their relationship as if people aren't being shot all around them.

But there is something extremely-offputting about the show, so willing to go all grisly on characters they built and had made viewers care about -- all in the service of May sweeps. Hospital shows are easily the most manipulative dramas on TV; it's so easy to bring in a kid in peril to twist the knife in a viewer's heart. But this kind of end of season overkill only shows contempt they for the fans.

I loved the concept and thought it was totally original. The script read so fluid, fun and real and I’m glad I got to do it. I’m glad she (director Jac Shaeffer) hired me. She had somebody else, which I actually know who it was but can’t say, but I’m glad I kind of swooped in to it and got it.

Diane Downs

Diane Downs told emergency room personnel at the hospital where she drove her shot and bleeding children, that a man had flagged her down and subsequently shot her and her 3 children. Shortly thereafter the Diane Downs murder investigation began.

Diane Downs was ultimately convicted on shooting her three children; Christie, 8; Cheryl, 7; and Danny, 3; and killing Cheryl. She had shot herself in the arm as well; claiming she was shot by the same man who supposedly shot her children.

The motive in the Diane Downs murder case came to light when investigators read her diary. She was involved with a married man who didn’t want her children. Eliminating her children seemed her only option. Diane Downs was obviously a very sick woman. Later, during the trial, daughter Christie was able to testify.

Good Morning America

Spike Lee and David Downs on ‘Good Morning America’ (VIDEO)

Director Spike Lee stopped by Good Morning America on Thursday, May 13, with David Downs, the executive director for the World Cup Bid committee.

The Bid committee is responsible for raising enough money for the United States to be able to bid on the opportunity to host the World Cup in either 2018 or 2022. Down talked about the politics behind convincing FIFA that the United States can host a profitable and memorable soccer showdown.

If they can convince the committee to bring the World Cup to the U.S., it has the potential to boost the economy in a big way, which Downs expressed to Good Morning America and its live audience. The process for the bid kicked off in December 2008, and the committee expects to have an answer from FIFA by December 22, 2010.

Spike Lee, who is a member of the World Cup Bid committee, spoke intimately about his love of soccer and his expansive travels over the years to engage in the sport as a spectator.

missing money

Audit: $270K gone from Wagoner schools Child Nutrition Program source of problem, audit saysMore than $270,000 has been identified as missing from Wagoner Public Schools’ Child Nutrition Program from 2005 to 2009, according to a state audit.

State Auditor Steve Burrage released the audit Wednesday. He said in a media release the missing money is the result of a lack of oversight and giving too much authority to one employee.

Mary Gaylor, who worked for the district about 15 years and was child nutrition director and district treasurer until last year, took complete control over receiving and depositing lunch and breakfast funds, according to the audit.

The district had an average annual loss of about $67,000 while Gaylor was in charge, the audit states. The audit only covered four years because there were no records available for longer than that period.

The audit compared bank deposits with records from each of the district’s six nutrition sites and found they did not match in 43 of the 44 months reviewed, Burrage said.

Gaylor was suspended in April 2009 and the school board accepted her resignation last June.

The state audit came on the heels of an audit by the Oklahoma Department of Education that found discrepancies in the number of free and reduced price meals reported by the school district. Burrage said his staff believes Gaylor gathered all the documents from each of the district’s cafeterias every day. She then allegedly rewrote the deposit slips to make them match the funds she put in the bank. It is also believed she fraudulently inflated the number of free and reduced meals the district was serving to conceal the discrepancy.

“Breakfast, lunch and snack sales didn’t match deposits and fund balances couldn’t be reconciled in any of the records. Unfortunately, it appears no one knew the fund was short,” Burrage said in a media release.

Investigators were able to compare computer-generated daily sales reports prepared at each site to the actual bank deposits made by Gaylor in order to identify the fund balance discrepancies, Burrage said. “We documented annual losses ranging from more than $58,000 to almost $81,000 for the four years that records were available,” Burrage said. “We were unable to determine when the misappropriation may have begun because we could only go back to 2005, even though Gaylor had been there a lot longer than that.”

The report states the auditor was unable to determine how much of the missing $270,000 was in cash. However, bank records show that through August 2008 and April 2009, the amount of cash deposited totaled $3,800.68 After suspension in April 2009, there was more than $5,000 deposited in the remaining three weeks of that month and nearly $7,000 in cash was deposited the next month.

Charts prepared by the auditor’s office showed the variance in the amount of money collected at each cafeteria and the amount deposited ranged from $95.20 in June 2007 to as much as $17,000 in May 2006.

The report also states that Gaylor did not make daily deposits:

• In April 2006, money was collected on 18 separate days and two deposits were made: One on the 11th and one on the 25th.

• Site reports indicate $95.20 was collected in June 2007 and nothing in July. On July 3, 2007, $8,613.42 was deposited.

• Site reports show no money was collected in June 2008. On July 1 2008, $5,545.25 was deposited.

The discrepancies may have gone unnoticed because nutrition program funds were deposited and held in one account throughout the school year while all food service costs were paid from the district’s general fund. The funds in the child nutrition bank account were eventually transferred in one lump sum to the district’s general fund at the start of a new fiscal year. Any discrepancy in the fund balance may not have been as easily detectable once the money was added to the $18 million general fund account.

Burrage said the school district began corrective action on setting up internal controls even before the audit was completed. “I recommend every school district take a close look at cafeteria funds, activity funds and every other activity where cash is received to make sure every penny collected is deposited and accounted for,” he said.

The audit has been turned over to the District Attorney’s Office for possible prosecution.

DA Jerry Moore said his office assisted with the investigation and he has received a copy of it but has not made a decision as to whether charges will be filed.

lena horne died

Barrier-breaking jazz star Lena Horne dies at 92

Lena Horne, the enchanting jazz singer and actress who reviled the bigotry that allowed her to entertain white audiences but not socialize with them, slowing her rise to the Broadway superstardom, has died. She was 92.

Horne died Sunday at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, according to hospital spokeswoman Gloria Chin. Chin would not release any other details.

Horne, whose striking beauty and magnetic sex appeal often overshadowed her sultry voice, was remarkably candid about the underlying reason for her success. "I was unique in that I was a kind of black that white people could accept," she once said. "I was their daydream. I had the worst kind of acceptance because it was never for how great I was or what I contributed. It was because of the way I looked."

In the 1940s, she was one of the first black performers hired to sing with a major white band, the first to play the Copacabana nightclub and among a handful with a Hollywood contract. In 1943, MGM Studios loaned her to 20th Century-Fox to play the role of Selina Rogers in the all-black movie musical "Stormy Weather." Her rendition of the title song became a major hit and her signature piece.

On screen, on records and in nightclubs and concert halls, Horne was at home vocally with a wide musical range, from blues and jazz to the sophistication of Rodgers and Hart in songs like "The Lady Is a Tramp" and "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered."

In her first big Broadway success, as the star of "Jamaica" in 1957, reviewer Richard Watts Jr. called her "one of the incomparable performers of our time." Songwriter Buddy de Sylva dubbed her "the best female singer of songs."

But Horne was perpetually frustrated with the public humiliation of racism. "I was always battling the system to try to get to be with my people. Finally, I wouldn't work for places that kept us out. ... It was a damn fight everywhere I was, every place I worked, in New York, in Hollywood, all over the world," she said in Brian Lanker's book "I Dream a World: Portraits of Black Women Who Changed America."

While at MGM, she starred in the all-black "Cabin in the Sky," in 1943, but in most of her other movies, she appeared only in musical numbers that could be cut in the racially insensitive South without affecting the story. These included "I Dood It," a Red Skelton comedy; "Thousands Cheer" and "Swing Fever," all in 1943; "Broadway Rhythm" in 1944; and "Ziegfeld Follies" in 1946.

"Metro's cowardice deprived the musical of one of the great singing actresses," film historian John Kobal wrote.

Early in her career Horne cultivated an aloof style out of self-preservation, becoming "a woman the audience can't reach and therefore can't hurt," she once said. Later she embraced activism, breaking loose as a voice for civil rights and as an artist. In the last decades of her life, she rode a new wave of popularity as a revered icon of American popular music.

Her 1981 one-woman Broadway show, "Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music," won a special Tony Award. In it, the 64-year-old singer used two renditions — one straight and the other gut-wrenching — of "Stormy Weather" to give audiences a glimpse of the spiritual odyssey of her five-decade career.

A sometimes savage critic, John Simon, wrote that she was "ageless ... tempered like steel, baked like clay, annealed like glass; life has chiseled, burnished, refined her."

When Halle Berry became the first black woman to win the best actress Oscar in 2002, she sobbed: "This moment is for Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne, Diahann Carroll. ... It's for every nameless, faceless woman of color who now has a chance because this door tonight has been opened."

Lena Mary Calhoun Horne, the great-granddaughter of a freed slave, was born in Brooklyn on June 30, 1917, to a leading family in the black bourgeoisie. Her daughter, Gail Lumet Buckley, wrote in her 1986 book "The Hornes: An American Family" that among their relatives was a college girlfriend of W.E.B. Du Bois and a black adviser to Franklin D. Roosevelt. Dropping out of school at age 16 to support her ailing mother, Horne joined the chorus line at the Cotton Club, the fabled Harlem night spot where the entertainers were black and the clientele white.

She left the club in 1935 to tour with Noble Sissle's orchestra, billed as Helena Horne, the name she continued using when she joined Charlie Barnet's white orchestra in 1940.

A movie offer from MGM came when she headlined a show at the Little Troc nightclub with the Katherine Dunham dancers in 1942.

Her success led some blacks to accuse Horne of trying to "pass" in a white world with her light complexion. Max Factor even developed an "Egyptian" makeup shade especially for the budding actress while she was at MGM.

But in his book "Gotta Sing Gotta Dance: A Pictorial History of Film Musicals," Kobal wrote that she refused to go along with the studio's efforts to portray her as an exotic Latin American. "I don't have to be an imitation of a white woman that Hollywood sort of hoped I'd become," Horne once said. "I'm me, and I'm like nobody else."

Horne was only 2 when her grandmother, a prominent member of the Urban League and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, enrolled her in the NAACP. But she avoided activism until 1945 when she was entertaining at an Army base and saw German prisoners of war sitting up front while black American soldiers were consigned to the rear.

That pivotal moment channeled her anger into something useful.

She got involved in various social and political organizations and — along with her friendship with Paul Robeson — got her name onto blacklists during the red-hunting McCarthy era.

By the 1960s, Horne was one of the most visible celebrities in the civil rights movement, once throwing a lamp at a customer who made a racial slur in a Beverly Hills restaurant and in 1963 joining 250,000 others in the March on Washington when Martin Luther King Jr. gave his "I Have a Dream" speech. Horne also spoke at a rally that same year with another civil rights leader, Medgar Evers, just days before his assassination.

It was also in the mid-'60s that she put out an autobiography, "Lena," with author Richard Schickel.

The next decade brought her first to a low point, then to a fresh burst of artistry.

She had married MGM music director Lennie Hayton, a white man, in Paris in 1947 after her first overseas engagements in France and England. An earlier marriage to Louis J. Jones had ended in divorce in 1944 after producing daughter Gail and a son, Teddy.

In the 2009 biography "Stormy Weather," author James Gavin recounts that when Horne was asked by a lover why she'd married a white man, she replied: "To get even with him."

Her father, her son and her husband, Hayton, all died in 1970 and 1971, and the grief-stricken singer secluded herself, refusing to perform or even see anyone but her closest friends. One of them, comedian Alan King, took months persuading her to return to the stage, with results that surprised her. "I looked out and saw a family of brothers and sisters," she said. "It was a long time, but when it came I truly began to live."

And she discovered that time had mellowed her bitterness.

"I wouldn't trade my life for anything," she said, "because being black made me understand."

betty white saturday night live

'Saturday Night Live' recap: Betty White makes the night

At 88 1/2 years old, Betty White this weekend became the oldest host of "Saturday Night Live" and delivered (inspired?) 1 of the show's most consistently funny episodes of the season.

I realize that my Betty love could be tainting my opinion, but I enjoyed practically every sketch. Having White and returning cast members Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Molly Shannon, Maya Rudolph, Ana Gasteyer and Rachel Dratch seemed to freshen every tired current skit "SNL" trotted out.

Sure, the "SNL" writers overplayed White's age and naughty nature by giving her a ton of genitalia, sex and elderly jokes, but they just didn't seem to get--no pun intended--old. I was actually surprised how much they used her, too. She was in every skit. I half expected her to perform with Jay-Z. (I may have enjoyed him more.)

I was a little surprised they didn't spoof "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" or "Golden Girls" or something else from White's 62-year career, but I can't say I'm disappointed. It may have been too obvious a joke. It might have been to have her spoof her career in some other way; maybe playing a bitchy version of herself. But I guess she's done that already on "30 Rock," or was it "Ugly Betty?"

Anyway, let's talk about what they did do with White. Below you'll find a recap of all the Bettiness. I happen to think that if it wasn't the best "SNL" of the current season, it was close to it. The Tina Fey-hosted ep was great, but this one was more consistently funny. Did White top the other high points of the season, Zach Galifianakis and Jon Hamm? What do you think?

Nurses Day

The World Honors Nurses By Celebrating Nurses Day

The National Nurses day is usually celebrated around the world on May 6.
It is a one week celebration that starts from the 6th day of the month of May and ends on the 12th, which is also the birth date of Florence Nightingale.

It has been celebrated by the International Council of Nurses since 1965 but the history of the Nurses Day can be hunted down in 1953. An official of the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare Dorothy Sutherland proposed to President Eisenhower to proclaim a “Nurses day” but eventually he didn’t approve it.

In 1974, the decision was made to celebrate the day on May 12 as also to commemorate the birth of Florence Nightingale, who is known as the founder of Modern Nursing. In 1981, nurses in New Mexico started a resolution that on May 6 would be announced as the “National Recognition Day for Nurses”.

ernie harwell

Ernie Harwell: Long gone, never forgotten

The Ernie Harwell died Tuesday night, ending his battle with cancer at the age of 92, but his voice and spirit will live on forever in the ears and minds of many.

Tears were shed in the press box at Joe Louis Arena while the Red Wings were playing the San Jose Sharks when the news spread. As cynical and callous as reporters can be, this story was tough to treat as it was just another death because Harwell treated anyone he ever met like a friend.

Yours truly was one of the lucky ones.

I'll miss Harwell's greeting "HELLO! Larry!" on the phone and in person and hearing him say "Phi Alpha!" in a nod to our brotherhood in the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

My first vivid memory of Harwell other than listening to him call Detroit Tigers games on the radio growing up in Ann Arbor, Mich. was during the mid-1990s at Tiger Stadium.

Harwell, actor Jeff Daniels, writer Jack Ebling, whom I worked with at the Lansing State Journal, and I spent about 15 minutes shooting the breeze behind the backstop while Ken Griffey Jr. was hitting homers during the Seattle Mariners' batting practice.

It was one of the coolest moments of my life.

Like no one could, Harwell compared Griffey's talents with Willie Mays in one breath and the next, he talked about playing cards with Jackie Robinson on road trips with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Harwell barely knew me back then when I was making $25 an article as a freelance writer but he gave me genuine respect as if I was an important member of the media or society. As I got to know him better, I found out he was like that with everyone.

The true test of people is how they treat someone who can do nothing for them and Harwell passed that measure of a human being better than anybody. Harwell greeted everyone the same rich or poor, young or old, famous or unknown and that made his legend grow beyond the borders of the state he loved and the sport he adored.

Getting to know him away from crowds was simply special.

Spending time with him and his beloved wife, Lulu, at their rented home in Lakeland, Fla., at their previous house in suburban Detroit where her roses were breathtaking or their apartment at a posh retirement center was simply priceless.

When he announced in February 2002 that season would be his last in the broadcast booth, I bought him a Motown baseball cap from the new terminal at Detroit's airport and was tickled every time he wore it. Harwell, though, gave me more intangible gifts than I ever could've given him.

On Monday, Nov. 30, 2009 less than two months after he announced he had inoperable cancer Harwell agreed to let me pay him a visit. He didn't want a story written that day, growing tired of the hype that surrounded his declining health, and I was OK with that because I welcomed another opportunity to spend time with him.

Harwell looked and sounded really good on that afternoon, saying he was wasn't in pain and was unafraid of dying. He asked about my family and job as he always did and prayed with me for the first time, a surreal few minutes I'll never forget.

His health deteriorated so much recently that he needed around-the-clock care and the months he had to live dwindled to days.

Even though all knew this day would come and no one was more prepared than Harwell Michigan is melancholy at best. It's sad to lose a once-in-a-lifetime icon such as Harwell, but strangers and friends alike should be glad he's at peace.
