“The captains of finance and the public stewards of our financial system ignored warnings and failed to question, understand, and the manage evolving risks within a system essential to the well-being of the American public,” according to the conclusions of a much-anticipated book released after a one-year examination by the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission.

Throughout the book, criticism focused on government, the banking industry and over-leveraged borrowers — each receiving much of the blame for hardships and difficulties that continue to ripple through the economy.

He's reportedly in stable condition in a Sydney hospital.

Taco Bell

Taco Bell Meat Mixture Defended by Company

Taco Bell meat is being defended by the fast-food company after allegations surfaced that most of the product isn't all beef.

On Friday, a class action lawsuit was filed against the company by Montgomery law firm Beasley, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis & Miles. The lawsuit claims that 65 percent of the Taco Bell meat mixture contains filler is mostly made of filler ingredients such as soy lecithin, autolyzed yeast extract and modified corn starch.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of a California resident Amanda Obney. Obney reportedly isn't seeking money- she just wants Taco Bell to publicly reveal it’s ingredients.

Patricia Krenwinkel

No parole for killer Patricia Krenwinkel who 'became monster' below Charles Manson

The two-member parole panel made clear yesterday it was the horror of the Manson killings, among the most notorious of the twentieth century, that led them to reject the bid for parole in spite of Patricia Krenwinkel's efforts to change her life.

Krenwinkel was convicted - along with Manson and 2 other female followers - of murdering 7 people in 1969, including actress Sharon Tate, the wife of filmmaker Roman Polanski who was 8 1/2 months pregnant.

The decision was handed down after a four-hour hearing and more than an hour of deliberations at which Krenwinkel wept, apologised for her murderous deeds and said she was ashamed of her actions.

Steven Tyler

Steve Tyler's a Dog, and the Jennifer Lopez is a Fox

After all the hype about the "new" era of "American Idol," the season premiere of the Season 10 was pretty much just like the season premiere of Season 9.

There were the same weirdos (the guy who burps when he's nervous), the same wannabes (the Britney fanatic), the same sob stories (enter triumph over tragedy here), even the same songs ("Hallelujah" yet again) -- pretty much the same everything.

One major change: These judges "aren't in the business of crushing spirits," as Jennifer Lopez put it. But here's one pleasant surprise -- they were a lot funnier than we thought they would be. Especially Steven Tyler. While the Aerosmith frontman doesn't have Cowell's frosty wit, he is pretty outrageous. His best line of the night, in response to 1 contestant: "Well hellfire, save matches, f--- a duck, and see what happens." What??

Alex Lambert

Former 'American Idol' Contestant Alex Lambert Not Homeless, Rep Says

On the eve of the season ten debut of "American Idol," one of last season's most lovable losers has gotten himself back into the news. Perhaps you remember (though probably not) stage-fright-wracked singer Alex Lambert, the talented but nervous guitar strummer whose ouster unleashed an online petition of support from more than 13,000 fans who wanted him reinstated to the show.

Well, on Monday night, Lambert posted a string of tweets in which he claimed he'd been forced to live on the streets of Los Angeles since Oct, when he wrapped up his stint on the reality series "If I Can Dream," the online show he fled to after being booted from "Idol."

After chatting with some fellow fans and former "Idol" pals about his frustrations with the music biz, Lambert dropped this bombshell: "Ever since 'IICD' ended I've been kinda homeless! Sleepin on the street and behind buildings. I have a choice to stay and pursue my career or go back to texas and not do music! I'm usually a strong person but I can't take it anymore. I've been goin to coffee shops and other stores so I can tweet to my snaf! Because to be honest! You guys are all I really have!"

Michael Dyer

College football's national champions continue to reside in the Southeastern Conference.

Wes Byrum drilled a 19-yard field goal as time expired to give Auburn a 22-19 win over Oregon, allowing the No.1 Tigers to the finish 14-0. The kick came after Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton and freshman running back Michael Dyer fueled a 73-yard drive that began once the Ducks tied the game on a touchdown and a 2 point conversion.

Dyer made the 2 biggest plays on the winning drive. First he rolled over an Oregon tackler for a 7 yard gain near midfield, stayed on his feet and scooted another 30 yards to the Oregon 23. Dyer ran 16 yards on the next play to put Auburn at the 1.

Auburn was milking a 19-11 lead late in the 4th quarter until Oregon's Casey Matthews knocked the ball from Newton's hands, setting up a 45-yard drive that ended when Darron Thomas threw a shovel pass to LaMichael James for a touchdown. Thomas then hit Jeff Maehl for the tying 2 point conversion with 2:33 left.

Gabrielle Giffords

Giffords had history with the Palin, Tea Party

As of Saturday, Arizona Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' name appeared on a website titled "take back the 20" as part of a list originally issued by Sarah Palin of the vulnerable House Democrats. A map on the site showed crosshairs over the contested Democratic districts.

Palin 1st posted the list in March 2010, naming 20 House members who voted for health care reform and represented districts that Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona won in the 2008 presidential election.

The post read, "We'll aim for these races and many others. This is just the first salvo in a fight to elect people across the nation who will bring common sense to Washington," and was accompanied by a map with targets over the districts.

At the time, Giffords responded to the map by saying on MSNBC that her long-serving colleagues had "never seen anything like it."

Los Lobos

Fillmore Hosts Birthday Bash For The Bill Graham

San Francisco's most venerable rock club gathers such luminaries LA Latin-rock heroes Los Lobos and the local songwriter Jackie Green to pay tribute to the late Bay Area promoter Bill Graham Saturday night, celebrating what would have been Graham's 80th birthday. The party serves as chance for friends and family of this giant in local rock history to get together and remember the pioneering and sometimes prickly figure while raising funds for the Bill Graham Memorial Foundation.

Los Angeles-based band Los Lobos has been igniting stages with an incendiary mix of roots-rock, traditional Latin sounds, soulful grooves and heady experimentation for over 30 years. Drawing equally from rock, Tex-Mex, country, R&B, blues, and traditional Spanish and Mexican folk music, Los Lobos grew from its East LA bar origins to earn a reputation as 1 of the most creative groups to emerge from the '80s.

Target Logo

Target Logo Goes Minimal – New Branding Trend?

Being the branding and marketing fanatic that I am, I seem to the always notice intricacies that a normal (sane) person would typically overlook. In this instance, it happens to be the Target logo revision.

I’m not exactly sure when the change took place, but Target has removed text from their logo and is now relying on the good ole’ target icon (bullseye) as captain of the ship. Does this remind you of another logo revision that recently took place? Well, it should.

On January 5th, Starbucks announced a logo revision that, surprisingly, did exactly what Target has done. Text was removed from the logo and the Starbucks “siren” is now featured in all its glory.

Salons

Tips to Keep Black Salons in Business

Black Enterprise is giving out pointers to the owners of black hair salons that will help them stay in business in a down economy. The 1st tip is to require stylists to brush up on their skills. They should know how to do natural hair, not just traditional chemical processes and weaves, so that they can service a range of clients. Black salon owners should also offer consultations to clients thinking about transitioning from chemically processed hair to natural hair.

This can aid in getting new clients and giving them information about hair care that they need. The magazine also suggests selling products in the salon that customers are looking for, which offers another income stream. Salon owners need to improve scheduling -- i.e., stop stacking clients. Waiting for hours to get your hair done is the product of a bygone era. Clients expect to be in and out in a reasonable amount of time. Not only is it bad manners and disrespectul of your client's time, but keeping clients waiting

Mega Millions Winner

California Mega Millions winner has $340,608 unclaimed winning lottery ticket

The California lottery winner who matched five Mega Millions winning numbers, has yet to claim the $340,608 lottery money. The California Lottery announced January 3, 2011, the Mega Millions winner purchased the winning lottery ticket over 2 months ago at Al’s Market, located at 7062 Westminster Boulevard in Westminster, California.

Mega Millions Results

The California winning lottery ticket matched 5 of 6 numbers 3, 52, 28, 8, 21 – but missed the Mega number of 43. The strange thing is, the Mega Millions winning ticket has been missing in action all this time. It just might be possible the lottery winner has misplaced the ticket, or is just stringing it out so know one knows his/her identity.

Live To Dance

'Live to Dance' Recap: The Good, The Bad, And The Memorable

Paula Abdul is back at the judges' table on her new show Live to Dance, along with choreographer Travis Payne and the Pussycat Dolls member Kimberly Wyatt. For tonight's premiere, contestants competed to get on the short list for the semi-finals as they make their way to the finale where somebody, or a group of somebodies, will be named America's best dance act. The pot of gold at the end of that rainbow is worth a nice $500,000 and unlike other competitions, there is no age limit so the lucky leprechaun can be 9 or 90.

I generally hate the beginning of talent competitions because they always spend so much time on mediocre or downright awful contestants, but this 1 kept that to a minimum and it was actually quite enjoyable. Of course, that doesn't mean it was all good! Here's a rundown of the good, the bad, and the ... otherwise memorable.

Philip Markoff

Megan McAllister: How Craigslist Killer’s Fiancee Didn’t Know
Megan McAllister was engaged to Phillip Markoff, having no idea that this seemingly clean-cut guy was the Craigslist Killer.

After watching the Lifetime movie last night, we wonder how she couldn’t know about his crimes.

But, if you stayed tuned after the movie and saw the special “Beyond the The Headlines: Catching the Craigslist Killer,” you saw one of his victims talk about how she had no clue that he was dangerous when she met him, either.

There was an image he presented to the world: a bright, young medical student about to get married. He looked like the boy-next-door. He didn’t look like a criminal and he wasn’t someone that would be on the radar for the police as a possible suspect.

Pete Postlethwaite

Pete Postlethwaite: 1946-2011

The great grizzled British character actor Pete Postlethwaite has died, too young to go at the age 64.

Cinema audiences last caught a whiff of his menace in “The Town,” playing The Florist, the aged mobster who set up robberies and sent Ben Affleck, Jeremy Renner and company off to take the risks while he ran his underworld from the cozy confines of a florist shop.  He was in “Clash of the Titans,” and of course, “Inception,” and earlier, brilliantly,”The Usual Suspects,” “Amistad,” “Hamlet,” a very long list of pretty darned good credits.

There he was in “The Last of the Mohicans,” which I was watching on BluRay just last weekend. He classed up and working classed up many a film, mainly from the UK, from “In the Name of the Father” to “Brassed Off,” a film whose release afforded me the opportunity to catch up with him as he passed through Atlanta, promoting it.

Chuck Berry

The Chuck Berry falls ill during Chicago show; but refuses hospital

About an hour into a rapidly-deteriorating concert at the Congress Theater Saturday night, Chuck Berry slumped over an accompanist's keyboard before being helped offstage.

The 84-year-old rock and roll legend and a backing band of 3 Chicago musicians attempted to resume the show for a packed house about 15 minutes later, but Berry almost immediately was taken off again to be checked by paramedics who had been called to the scene.

After being examined, Berry returned one last time to thank the fans who had waited in hopes for the show to continue, but he left the stage -- using a bit of his signature "duck walk" -- without playing again. Shortly afterward, he walked out of the theatre's stage door on his own into an awaiting limousine. Berry signed a release saying he was OK, and he was not taken to a hospital, according to Fire Department spokesman Joe Roccasalva.
