OMAHA BEACH, France — On the 65th anniversary of the Allies' D-Day landings, President Barack Obama on Saturday paid tribute to the invasion that turned the tide of World War II and cemented the trans-Atlantic alliance.
Normandy's cliffs and coastline, still pocked with gun emplacements and other remnants of the war, provided sure footing for an American president. The site for Obama's last speech of his international tour was the American Cemetery above Omaha Beach near Colleville-sur-Mer. The leaders of France, Britain and Canada also planned remarks.
"This day marks not only the triumph of freedom, but it also marks how the trans-Atlantic alliance has allowed for extraordinary prosperity and security on both sides of the Atlantic," Obama said at a news conference with French President Nicolas Sarkozy in nearby Caen.
