After hitting a peak of 12.4 percent in March and falling in April and May, unemployment in Crow Wing County is once again on the rise - but only slightly so.

In the region, three counties once again reached double-digit unemployment.

But the city of Brainerd no longer holds the dubious honor of having the largest unemployment rate of larger Minnesota cities in the state.

The June unemployment rate in the region was higher than the state average and the Crow Wing County rate was about the same as the U.S. rate.
The June unemployment rate, not seasonally adjusted, ranged from a low of 9.1 percent in Todd County to a high of 12.3 percent in Mille Lacs County.

The Crow Wing County unemployment rate in June was 9.5 percent, up from 9.3 percent in May. The Cass County unemployment rate in June was 9.3 percent, up from 9.1 percent in May.

Two years ago, the Crow Wing County unemployment rate was 4.7 percent.

The three area counties with double-digit unemployment in June were Mille Lacs County at 12.3 percent, Morrison County at 11.3 percent and Wadena County at 10.3 percent.

In the city of Brainerd, the June unemployment rate was 15.4 percent, down from 15.6 percent in May. The city unemployment rate peaked at 21 percent in January. Two years ago, the city of Brainerd unemployment was 8.2 percent.

The distinction of having the highest unemployment rate in a large Minnesota city goes to Hibbing. Its June unemployment hit 18.7 percent, up from 14.5 percent in May. Behind Brainerd is Bemidji, which had June unemployment of 14 percent and May unemployment of 13.2 percent.

The Brainerd lakes area micropolitan unemployment rate was 9.4 percent in June, up from 9.2 percent in May. The recent peak was 13 percent in January and February.

The U.S. unemployment rate was 9.7 percent in June, with a seasonally adjusted rate of 9.5 percent. In May, the U.S. rate was 9.1 percent, with a seasonally adjusted rate of 9.4 percent.

The Minnesota unemployment rate in June, both seasonally adjusted and not seasonally adjusted, was 8.4 percent. In May, the rate was 7.8 percent not seasonally adjusted and 8.1 percent seasonally adjusted.
