Moose

It has only been seven months since fencing has limited moose and other wildlife from making their way onto Route 7, but already the province is seeing fewer accidents and injuries, said Transportation Minister Denis Landry.

It is early to come to any firm conclusions with less than a year's statistics to study, he added, but it is clear that in 2007 before the installation of wildlife fencing along the 27 kilometres of highway between Saint John and Fredericton, there were 22 vehicle collisions with moose, and 15 people injured as a result.

In 2008, there were 18 similar accidents and only four people injured, Landry pointed out.

Landry said it wasn't until November when all fencing was in place on that wildlife-dense roadway, but he believes his department's Think Moose campaign introduced last year likely contributed to the favourable statistics.
