Teens across the nation recently hit the designer boutiques in order to spend exorbitant amounts of money on spring prom-wear. Not so for some couples, who opted instead to vie for scholarship money by entering a contest to design and create prom outfits out of colored duct tape…who knew?

The contest called Stuck At Prom, had 215 entries from young couples all over the country who were willing to take up the challenge. Among those making it into the Top 10 are Rachel Cunningham and Billy Oliver, who attend Elyria’s Midview High School.Maris Blanchard and her brother are also among the finalists. She created a queen of hearts dress and her brother fashioned a Mad Hatter ensemble. They hope to win the $6,000 cash prize, with an additional $3,000 awarded to the winner’s high school. What would she do with the money? She’d go to art school.The project is not for the faint-hearted. Many of these budding artists have spent over 100 hours to create their one of a kind masterpieces. Now it is your turn. Make it quick because the voting will be completed after July 2, 2009. The winning couple will be announced on July 9, 2009.

The pop legend weighed just 51kg when he passed away last week after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest at his Los Angeles home.

Leaked autopsy details reportedly show the singer was a "virtual skeleton", whose stomach was empty except for partially-dissolved prescription pills.

It is understood he ate just one tiny meal a day.

His hips, thighs and shoulders were covered in needle marks, believed to be the result of narcotic painkillers the singer took three times a day.

There were also four injection sites near his heart - evidence of a failed bid to pump adrenaline directly into the organ in an attempt to restart it.

Medical examiners were also believed to be shocked by the surgery scars, which suggest Michael had at least 13 cosmetic procedures.

The bridge of his nose had vanished and its right side had collapsed.

He was reportedly wearing a wig at the time of his death. Underneath it, he was almost bald, with only "peach fuzz" covering his scalp.

Actress Gale Storm died in Danville, California on June 27, 2009 at the age of 87. She was best known for her 1950’s television role in My Little Margie.

Josephine Owaissa Cottle was born in Bloomington, Texas on April 5, 1922. She won The Gateway to Hollywood Contest held at the CBS Radio Studio when she was 17-years old. The prize was a one-year contract with a movie studio. Her name was immediately changed to Gale Storm.

She made several films before her career skyrocketed from 1952-1955 as she starred in My Little Margie. The television series was to be a summer replacement for I Love Lucy, but ended up running for 126 episodes. She went on to star in The Gale Storm Show from 1956-1960, with 143 episodes. Both shows enjoyed many years in reruns.

In 1981, Storm published her autobiography I Ain’t Down Yet, where she spoke of her battle with alcoholism. She has four stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contributions in radio, music, television and motion pictures.

Fred Travalena received his Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 2005.

Fred Travalena has been fighting with “Non-Hodgkin’s” Lymphoma for past seven years. Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is like a cancer in this disease that affects the cells of lymphocytes. The cells divide unusually.

Fred Travalena died on June 28, 2009 in Las Vegas; his death was first reported on his personal website.His funeral will be announced soon and will be open to the public.

Three people were killed seven wounded Saturday in a drive-by shooting at a motorcycle club fundraiser in California, authorities said.The shooting occurred around 6:45 p.m. (9:45 p.m. ET) at a pizza restaurant in Pico Rivera, located about 15 miles east of Los Angeles, according to authorities.

“We don’t know what type of vehicle was involved or how many,” said Sgt. Ed Hummel of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.The event was being held by a group known as the Old School Riders. Melanie oudin upsets jankovic
Just one day after I posted about her becoming the next big American tennis star Melanie Oudin won her sixth straight match in Wimbledon upsetting sixth seeded Jelena Jankovic in a three set battle 6-7(8), 7-5, 6-2. After coming through the qualifying last week, the 17 year old Oudin has played great tennis in the first week of Wimbledon. Today she used her power and variety effectively to upset Jankovic.

Oudin dispelled some of my doubts about her size because she does look freakishly strong for a seventeen year old. I think she can pack a little more power into her strokes with her current body type, but the most impressive part of her game today was her variety, she proved she is an all court player who can use slices and drop shots effectively.

This result is monumentally dissapointing for Jankovic, who started the year ranked #1. If Jankovic continues with these results she will be fighting just to be in the top 10 soon. Kind of reminds me of Ivanovic. Ivanovic did, however, advance today with a win over Sam Stosur.

The House held several hours of debate today on the cap-and-trade bill, which grew by a whopping 300 pages overnight, with a vote planned for this evening.
Just as things were wrapping up, Rep. John Boehner took the floor for his several minutes to speak. When he surpassed his five minutes, and went cruising on past 20, Rep. Henry Waxman interjected with a parliamentary question (somewhat paraphrased, but close):
“I know we have these magic minutes that allow leaders to speak forever, but is there a limit on how long he can speak, under parliamentary prodedure,” he asked.
The chair, Rep. Ellen Tauscher, answered the California Democrat disappointingly: “It is the custom of the House to hear the leader.”
Boehner then went on to read from the 300+ pages of amendments added to the 1,200-page at 3:09 a.m., berating the Congress for the irresponsible way it was approaching the mammoth bill:
“Don’t you think the American people expect us to understand what’s in this bill before we vote on it,” he asked. “I hate to do this to all of you, but when you file 300-pg amendment at 3:09 in the morning, someone has to work on it. I’ve been working on it today, and I’m gonna make sure you understand what’s in this.”
Right now, he’s still talking with no signs of slowing down. The reading of the bill is an edifying end to an embarrassing day on the floor, during which there was a lengthy debate between Tauscher, bill co-sponsor Rep. Ed Markey, and Republican Rep. Joe Barton on whether there was even a copy of the final version of the bill available for lawmakers to see (not that they’d read it).
The Democrats were hoping for a vote this afternoon. Guess we’ll see how long Boehner can talk

In an exclusive, TMZ is reporting that a member of Michael Jackson's family is saying that Jackson received a daily injection of a synthetic narcotic similar to morphine - Demerol - and that a dosage he received Thursday morning was "too much."

Jackson reportedly received the shot at 11:30 a.m. Family members believe that that's what caused the singer's death.Police said today they are searching for a doctor who they hope will help in the investigation of Jackson’s death.Los Angeles police spokeswoman Karen Rayner says that police towed from Jackson’s house a BMW owned by one of the superstar’s doctors.Said Rayner: “We have not been able to interview the doctor yet. His car was impounded because it may contain medications or other evidence that may assist the coroner in determining the cause of death.”

One law enforcement source told TMZ that the doctor gave Jackson an injection before he died. The web site reported that the doctor lived at the home, but Rayner said she could not confirm that and did not know the doctor’s identity.

She stressed that the doctor was not under criminal investigation but coroner’s investigators wanted to contact him.

In the weeks before his death, we might have said we didn't know how we felt about Michael Jackson. He'd become so bizarre, so pale, so foreign and different from the musical genius some of us once worshipped. We thought that we hardly thought about him, except perhaps as a punch line. We felt that we felt nothing. But when news of Jackson's death broke yesterday, it turned out that we were wrong. Fans and unfans alike, all around the world, all felt something, and sometimes very deeply.

"He was my first love," said Alesia Crawford, 48, a dentist who lives in Wheaton. "I used to sleep with his album covers." She had come to the Fye music store in Wheaton Mall to buy his music, as had many other fans. So, the always inflammatory Matt Taibbi is absolutely laying waste to Goldman in the latest edition of Rolling Stone. Zero Hedge has a copy of the article. The title of the article is "The Great American Bubble Machine: From tech stocks to high gas prices, Goldman Sachs has engineered every major market manipulation since the Great Depression - and they're about to do it again" so needless to say this is absolute red meat for everyone who despises Goldman (but of course there are none of those people on CAPS...).

The article basically lays the crash of the NASDAQ, the housing bubble, $4 a gallon gas, and the ridiculous nature of the bank bailout all at the feet of the Gods of Finance. This has all been discussed before, but it is still interesting to reread it, and Taibbi has some details I hadn't read before. However, the best parts come toward the end, when he accuses Goldman of using their influence to rig our current energy policy and create yet another playground for them to leach away our money. Of course, this is a RS article and a lot of the accusations are hearsay, but it's still an interesting read. Be forewarned, if you haven't read into the wonderful business practices of the boys at GS, then this is a lot of crooked and perverse bullsh*t to wade through at once. Regardless, these are certainly interesting times we are living through...

McMahon died shortly after midnight at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center surrounded by his wife, Pam, and other family members, said his publicist, Howard Bragman.

Bragman didn’t give a cause of death, saying only that McMahon had a “multitude of health problems the last few months.”

McMahon broke his neck in a fall in March 2007, and battled a series of financial problems as his injuries preventing him from working.

McMahon and Carson had worked together for nearly five years on the game show “Who Do You Trust?” when Carson took over NBC’s late-night show from Jack Paar in October 1962. McMahon played second banana on “Tonight” until Carson retired in 1992.

“You can’t imagine hooking up with a guy like Carson,” McMahon said in an interview with The Associated Press in 1993. “There’s the old phrase, hook your wagon to a star. I hitched my wagon to a great star.”

A District of Columbia Fire Department Web site said rescue workers located three bodies in the wreckage late Monday night. All three were declared dead at the scene.

Earlier Monday, officials confirmed six deaths, including the operator of the trailing train, Jeanice McMillan of Springfield, Va. Metro spokesman Steve Taubenkibel said McMillan had been a Metro employee since January 2007.

Debbie Hersman, a member of the National Transportation Safety Board, said investigators would cast a wide net, including checking operator procedures and track signals, interviewing witnesses and inspecting the tracks themselves. She said officials also were searching the wreckage for devices on the trains that record operating speeds and commands.

This Saturday we’re heading up to Duluth, MN to run Grandma’s Marathon (no, participation is not limited to female senior citizens). Michelle and my sister-in-law Amanda are running the 1/2 marathon. My Dad, brother Andy, and I are running the full. It should be a great weekend – the weather forecast looks good, the course is by far my favorite marathon course, and Duluth is a great city.In all honesty, though, I’m a little nervous about the race. Of the 10+ marathons I’ve run, this will be close to the worst shape I’ve ever been in to run. Thus, I’ve decided to approach this as a simple training run. I’ve also decided to experiment with a couple of things that will hopefully keep my mind off of my rapidly enervating body.

First, I’m planning to bring several energy gel packets. Although gels have been around for a long time, the Des Moines marathon last October (another race for which I was less than optimally prepared) was the first time I really used them. In that race I took two gels, both close to the end of the race, but I could definitely tell the difference. After doing a little research, I’m planning to take about four gels this time and space them out evenly throughout the race. We’ll see how it goes.

Juneteenth celebration takes place every year on June 19. The Juneteenth history reveals the day is also referred to as Freedom Day and Emancipation Day. It celebrates the day of freedom for slaves in Texas in 1865. Their freedom came two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation which went into effect on January 1, 1863. But for Texas slaves it was not until June 19, 1865 when Union soldiers entered Galveston, Texas and announced the end of the Civil War, and read out loud the Emancipation Proclamation that had already, technically, freed the state’s 250,000 or so slaves. One can hardly imagine the initial shock and excitement of the slaves to know they had been freed.

Every year since, including Juneteeen 2009, there has been a celebration.

It’s tragic that it took so long for freedom to come to Texas slaves. But although late, liberation did come. Juneteenth Celebration has continued to this day. In fact, it became an official state holiday in Texas in 1980. It is celebrated to some extent in numerous U.S. states. To find out more about Juneteenth history, see:

The Senate passed the Cash for Clunkers Program today, which gives consumers with cars that get less than 18 miles per gallon the ability to turn them in for a $3,500 or $4,500 cash voucher. The bill was nearly defeated by Republicans, but Democratic support saved the day in part due to Obama's lobbying of the program. The President still needs to sign the bill into law.

Although many people believe that the program is designed to reduce global warming emissions through the eradication of gas guzzling cars, its true purpose is to help out struggling automakers and car dealers with new car sales. A person who receives a credit as part of the program cannot buy a used car with the monies. The movie just came out a couple weeks ago, but The Hangover has done so well, a sequel is already being planned! The film's director says a sequel was already being talked about before the movie was even released, so they must be thinking up some good idea.

The Hangover is an amazingly funny, entertaining movie, so it's not surprise its makers have already confirmed that a sequel is in the works. Todd Phillips, the director of the movie, says, "We were thinking of sequel ideas when we were shooting, which sounds cocky, but we were doing it more because it was just fun to talk about ideas while hanging out on the set."

And filming for the sequel could begin as soon as next spring! Phillips says the only way the sequel will actually happen is if all four stars agree to sign on.

The stars of the movie include Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, and Heater Graham. According to Phillips, "I love The Hangover so much and I think we could crush it with the sequel. I've never had more fun making a movie,

It seems that yearbooks won’t hear the end of hidden obscenities, sexually-themed pranks and just-plain-weird oddknots secretly thrown into them this year. Another high school recently found out that their carried with it such a surprise.Students of Shaker Heights in Ohio were surprised to find a hidden message containing the F-word sprawled across their yearbook’s front cover. The yearbook had to be turned upside-down to be read.

The principal of the school has taken action, sending letters to the parents of their students shortly after the discovery of the message. Accompanying was the written apology of the student who designed the cover.

” I cannot begin to explain the miserable feeling I brought upon myself, when I betrayed the trust of all of you,” the student writes. “I apologize for offending anyone and everyone. It is unfortunate that I did not recognize the big responsibility and honor given to me when asked to design the cover of the Shaker Heights yearbook. I offer my sincere apologies.”

School administrators in Shaker Heights, Ohio, weren't impressed when they discovered a hidden obscenity on the cover of a high school yearbook.An art student drew a creative interpretation of Shaker Heights High School's "Red Raider" mascot and incorporated the F-word into the drawing.

"You have to turn it upside down and then it is right there," incoming senior Katie Rownd told After the word was discovered, Principal Michael Griffith sent a letter to parents that included an apology from the student who designed the cover. State inspectors investigating complaints of bad gasoline in Hampton Roads.

State inspectors are continuing to investigate complaints from Hampton Roads consumers about bad gasoline, a spokeswoman in Richmond said today.

Calls started pouring in to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services on Friday from drivers who said they were having trouble with their vehicles after filling up with fuel, said Elaine Lidholm, agency spokeswoman.

So far, the agency has received more than 150 complaints from consumers calling from Franklin, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Gloucester and other areas, Lidholm said.

Five inspectors and two supervisors have been checking the complaints and are expected to continue at least through this week, Lidholm said. The agency continues to receive complaints, although the number had decreased by this morning.

Veteran American golfer, Kenny Perry, has told CNN he is focused on winning this year's U.S. Open at Bethpage Black because time is running out on his career.

The 48-year-old who played his first professional tournament at the Doral-Eastern Open in 1984, said he wanted to win a major before ending his career next year.

"My time is running out, I'll play all four [majors] next year but that will be that after so long on the tour. So there's definitely a sense of urgency that I need to win one soon," Perry said.
Despite winning 13 PGA Tour events over an impressive career, the closest Perry has come to winning a major was in 2009 when he led at the Masters on the final day before losing a three-way play-off with eventual champion, Angel Cabrera of Argentina and compatriot Chad Campbell.

An Oklahoma man will only serve 1 year in prison for the rape of a 4-year-old girl. David Earls was sentenced to 20 years in prison but Judge Thomas Bartheld suspended 19 years as part of a plea bargain agreement.

“Some people think I could have given a different sentence, and I couldn’t,” says Bartheld. “In any plea bargain, where there is a negotiated plea, the court can’t change it.”

Earls, 64, was arrested after the girl told her grandmother about being raped. Earls admitted to raping and sodomizing the girl over the course of 4 months.

A prayer request for one of my favorite racing drivers.

Jayski posts that Johnny Benson was injured in a wreck at Berlin Raceway in Michigan during a supermodifieds race. As of this posting he is listed in serious but stable condition.

It has been a tough week for Benson, the defending NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champ, who lost his ride earlier in the week at Red Horse Racing when the team closed due to lack of sponsorship.
